Learning about the North Texas Burn Rehabilitation Model System.

The North Texas Burn Rehabilitation Model System (NTBRMS) conducts a comprehensive program of care, rehabilitation, and research involving children and adults who experience major burn injuries. This system includes Parkland Health & Hospital System and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), is based out of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the UTSW, and Karen Kowalske, MD is the principal investigator. The NTBRMS includes one collaborative research module project and two site specific research studies.

The NTBRMS provides care and conducts research through its main institution, as well as a network of satellite clinics to reach those clients in rural areas. The Center includes two projects: the effect of heat intolerance on exercise and physical function, and the evaluation of a web based social skills training program for burn survivors. The NTBRMS contributes data to the Burn Model Systems National Database and works with the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center to disseminate research results and consumer information to a wide audience.

How does this apply to the Hispanic/Latino with burn injury community? The NTBRMS disseminates informational materials in English and Spanish through the MSKTC’s accessible website. Here is a list of some of their factsheets on Burn Injury in Spanish:

  6. Empleo después de una lesión por quemadura
